The Permanent Representative of the Republic of Maldives presents letter of credence to the Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization

The Permanent Representative of the Republic of Maldives to the International Maritime Organization (IMO), High Commissioner Iruthisham Adam, presented her Letter of Credence to the Secretary-General of IMO, Arsenio Antonio Domínguez Velasco, in an official ceremony held today at the IMO headquarters.
 
At the ceremony, High Commissioner Iruthisham Adam conveyed greetings from President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and reaffirmed the Government of Maldives’ commitment to strengthening its collaboration with IMO and to building national capacity in maritime affairs through active engagement in the Organization’s initiatives. The Secretary-General welcomed the High Commissioner to her new role and reiterated the IMO’s support for the Maldives in various areas of mutual interest.
 
The International Maritime Organization, established on 17 March 1948, is a United Nations specialized agency, responsible for the safety and security of shipping and the prevention of marine and atmospheric pollution by ships. It aims to create a regulatory framework for the shipping industry that is fair and effective, universally adopted and universally implemented. At present, IMO has 174 Member States and 3 Associate Members. The Maldives joined the IMO on 31 May 1967. High Commissioner Iruthisham is the second Permanent Representative of the Republic of Maldives to be accredited to the IMO since the Maldives became a Member State.
 
High Commissioner Iruthisham Adam was accompanied by Deputy High Commissioner, Mohamed Ahmed, First Secretary Mariyam Asif and First Secretary Sara Khalid of the High Commission of Maldives to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
