The Permanent Representative of Maldives to the World Trade Organization (WTO), Ambassador Dr. Salma Rasheed presented her Letter of Credence to Director General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, in an official ceremony held today at the WTO Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.
During the ceremony, Ambassador Dr. Salma Rasheed conveyed greetings from President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and reaffirmed the commitment of the Government of Maldives to the rules-based multilateral trading system. Ambassador further expressed appreciation to the WTO for the various assistance provided to the Maldives and reassured strengthening of existing cooperation with the WTO. The Director General welcomed the Ambassador to her new role and reiterated the WTO’s commitment to support the Maldives in its development goals.
The World Trade Organization is an international organization comprising of 166 Member States. The Maldives is an active member of the World Trade Organization, having been a member of the WTO since 31 May 1995. Prior to joining the WTO, the Maldives was a signatory to the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT), since 19 April 1993.
Ambassador Dr. Salma Rasheed was accompanied by Mr. Mohamed Raaidh Saeedh, Attaché of the Permanent Mission of Maldives to the United Nations Offices and Other International Organizations in Geneva.
