The newly appointed non-resident High Commissioner of the Republic of the Maldives to Canada, His Excellency Abdul Ghafoor Mohamed, presented his Letter of Credence to Her Excellency the Right Honourable Mary Simon, the Governor General of Canada, this morning. The ceremony took place at the Official Residence of the Governor General at Rideau Hall, Ottawa.
During the meeting that followed the ceremony, High Commissioner Ghafoor conveyed greetings and best wishes from His Excellency President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to the Governor General and reflected on the longstanding friendly relations between the Maldives and Canada. He reaffirmed the commitment of the Government of Maldives to deepen and diversify the bilateral and multilateral engagement between the two countries.
The Governor General congratulated High Commissioner Ghafoor on his appointment and recognized Maldives’ contributions to global efforts in combating climate change. She also expressed Canada's readiness to enhance cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
During his visit to Ottawa, High Commissioner Ghafoor also held discussions with senior officials from Global Affairs Canada on exploring avenues to further strengthen Maldives–Canada cooperation.
High Commissioner Abdul Ghafoor Mohamed was appointed by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu on 4 March 2025. He also serves as the Ambassador of the Maldives to the United States of America.
