The Maldives has gifted a Thun’du Kunaa, a traditional hand-woven reed mat, for display at United Nations Headquarters in New York.
During his visit to UN Headquarters in 2024, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu decided to donate a Maldivian gift to the Headquarters in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the Maldives independence, and 60 years of the country’s membership in the United Nations.
The Thun’du Kunaa was unveiled today at the UN Headquarters by Dr Ali Naseer Mohamed, Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the United Nations. This is the first time a Maldivian gift is being displayed at the UN.
The Thun’du Kunaa was specially designed and hand-woven by a Maldivian artisan from the island of GDh Gadhdhoo, which is renowned for its beautiful Thun’du Kunaa. This intricately woven mat reflects the richness of Maldivian craftswomanship, and the country’s enduring artistic heritage.
