Foreign Minister highlights the enduring relevance of the United Nations Charter

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in partnership with the United Nations in the Maldives, hosted a special reception to celebrate United Nations Day 2025 and to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations.

Foreign Minister Dr Abdulla Khaleel, attended the event as Chief Guest, where he highlighted the Maldives’ active engagement with the United Nations and its unwavering commitment to multilateralism.

In his remarks, Minister Khaleel highlighted the critical role of international cooperation in addressing shared global challenges such as climate change, sustainable development, and the promotion of human rights. He also reflected on the enduring relevance of the UN Charter, noting that for eight decades, the United Nations has stood as a beacon of hope and a platform for collective action to promote peace, security, and development around the world.

The evening featured an exhibition that showcased key milestones and achievements from the six decades of close partnership between the Maldives and the United Nations, from the country’s early days of membership to its leadership in global climate advocacy.

Minister Khaleel reiterated that the Maldives remains steadfast in upholding the values and principles of the United Nations. He stressed that continued cooperation, mutual trust, and dialogue are essential in shaping a more peaceful, sustainable, and inclusive future for all nations.
