Missions
The mission of the ministry of foreign affairs is to assist and advice the government in the formulation and the execution of foreign policy and the pursuit of the objectives of increasing opportunities for national progress, prosperity, peace, security and prestige through a network of international contacts, exchanges and interactions.

The function of the ministry is that of carrying out the task of diplomatic and consular relations. These are representation, negotiation, communication, acquisition of information, assertion of legal positions and provision of consular services.

The rules governing the conduct of these relations are prescribed in the Vienna convention on diplomatic relations and the Vienna convention on consular relations. Diplomatic protocol and state practice are equally well established procedures for the conduct of diplomacy.

The role of the foreign ministry has been revolutionized by rapid changes in ICT, including satellite news networks and new media, as well as by rapid globalization.
 
Vision
Ministry of foreign affairs of the Maldives is the primary means of two way communication between foreign governments, audience and multilateral actors on the one-hand and the government of the Maldives on the other, while representing overseas both government and civil society. The ministry is a reliable source of information that is speedy, reliable and comprehensive, which assists in shaping short and long – term policy and advancing national interests. The ministry will measure up to the multifaceted challenges posed to its function as a result of rapid globalization and the swift advances in information and communication techonologies.
