Maldives and Suriname Establish Diplomatic Relations
24 October 2008,New York; The Republic of Maldives and the Republic of Suriname established diplomatic relations yesterday.
In a ceremony held at the Suriname Mission in New York, the Joint Communiqué formalizing diplomatic relations was signed on behalf of the Maldives by H.E. Mr. Ahmed Khaleel, Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the United Nations, and on behalf of the Government of Suriname, by H.E. Mr. Henry L. Mac Donald, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Suriname to the United Nations
The Republic of Suriname is situated at the continent of South America just North of the Equator. The country is bordered in the South by the Federal Republic of Brazil, in the North by the Atlantic Ocean, in the East by the French Overseas Department of French Guyana and in the West by the former British colony Guyana, now the Co-operative Republic of Guyana.
The Republic of Suriname is the 146th country to establish diplomatic relations withthe Maldives.
